Greetings POA members! As you may be aware the State Lakes Protection and Restoration Fund (SLPRF) was Funded two years ago in the Maryland legislative session at $1M/year for three years. While this amount was far less than had been requested, it constitutes recognition by the State that the State has a responsibility for the 16 lakes it owns. In the current legislative session our Garrett County State representatives, Senator George Edwards and Delegate Wendell Beitzel, have introduced companion bills to increase SLPRF funding to $3M/year starting in fiscal year 2022 and remove the "sunset" clause of three years. The proposed legislation also would alter “the purpose and authorized uses of the SLPRF to include protection and restoration of State-owned and State-managed lakes by removing sediment, treating contaminated sediment, preventing invasive species, and improving ecological and recreational value.” Clearly the broadening of the Fund’s authorized uses along with an increase in funding without a "sunset" clause will benefit all Maryland lakes and, in particular, Deep Creek Lake. Please take a moment to send letters of support for Senate Bill 582 and its companion House Bill 877 to both Senator Edwards at George.Edwards.Admin@senate.state.md.us and Delegate Beitzel at wendell.beitzel@house.state.md.us before February 25, 2020, when both bills are scheduled for a hearing in their respective committees. A draft letter that you may use as a guide for your letter may be seen here . Please add your own views and "spin" to your letters. If you are a Maryland resident living outside of Garrett County, please consider writing to your Senator and/or Delegate. Thanks for your help! Regards, Susie Crawford First VP
